James Gunn Was Offered Superman Before He Took On ‘The Suicide Squad’

Like trading in one set of parents for another, James Gunn’s move from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the DC Extended Universe has brought him to yet another treasure trove of comic book characters to pick from. As it turns out, the Guardians of the Galaxy director will soon be directing and writing the follow-up to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, but it turns out that he was offered a look at not just Superman, but one of his Super-companions as well.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, when James Gunn made the jump from Disney and Marvel Studios to Warner Bros and DC, Warners offered him an array of potential characters at his disposal. During that time, Superman was among the characters and properties of which Gunn could develop a film. More than that, though, while Gunn never got far enough to really sink his teeth into Superman, he did consider Krypto.

Superman would be one thing, but Krypto wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for James Gunn, given what he could do for a tree and a raccoon at Marvel Studios. Plus, between Young Justice and, soon, Titans, Krypto’s name recognition is growing. But then, getting back to Superman, what do you think of the idea of James Gunn potentially helming a Superman project? The character seems to be in a bit of limbo, despite Henry Cavill’s continued love of the character, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens with the Man of Steel.

But let’s say that this did happen, though? Could you imagine a Superman film with James Gunn in the director’s chair? How do you believe the character would fare in another director’s hands after both Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is currently scheduled to be released on August 5, 2021.
