Now that more people have gotten a chance to see James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we can finally talk about spoilers like Yondu's death.
With the theme of family running through Guardians, the death of Peter’s surrogate father in Yondu was made even more heartbreaking. Personally, I was really sad once I realized Yondu would be kicking the bucket, I didn’t want to lose a member of this team yet. James Gunn apparently had similar feelings but made the decision based on fan concerns.
“I didn’t want that to be the ending, and I kind of refused to put that in as the ending for a long time. It wasn’t how the movie ended. But, at the end of the day, I knew that’s where it needed to go. I knew that we need to have real stakes in these movies. We need to lose characters. And not everyone who sees Marvel movies loves that.”
Perhaps it’s because of Yondu’s death though that many fans and critics are praising Michael Rooker’s performance and Yondu’s character. Hopefully, Kraglin can act as a sufficient replacement for the character, and his power will certainly be a useful one to keep around. I’m sure James Gunn will figure out how to handle it all in Vol. 3, and even in his consultations on Infinity War.
