‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Director James Gunn Responds To Francis Ford Coppola’s Marvel Criticism

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has offered a response to Francis Ford Coppola’s criticism of Marvel movies.

Earlier today, Francis Ford Coppola issued statements more scathing than Martin Scorsese’s remarks about Marvel movies; while Martin Scorsese explained that he didn’t see the value in making several movies that are fundamentally similar (in spite of directing multiple gangster movies over an extensive career), Francis Ford Coppola outright called them despicable for that reason.

James Gunn, who commented on Martin Scorsese’s earlier comments, had more to add with this new expansion of criticism. While James Gunn did not mention Francis Ford Coppola by name in his response, he did explain that he felt the criticism was invalid due to similar complaints being laid against gangster movies in previous decades:

As it stands, Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola’s criticism of Marvel movies do not diminish their contributions to the realm of cinema. However, it’s just as fair to say that they’re labeling all superhero movies with the same broad paintbrush that was once used to criticize their own efforts years ago, as James Gunn is doing so here.

Details on the third chapter of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy are currently unknown, though the film will likely explore the ramifications of the universe-changing events in Avengers: Endgame. The film is also set to be the final outing for this current iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy team.

James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Sean Gunn. Chris Hemsworth’s involvement is speculated upon, due to Thor joining the Guardians of the Galaxy at the end of Avengers: Endgame, but it has yet to be confirmed by Marvel Studios or James Gunn.

Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest updates on James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Francis Ford Coppola, and Marvel movies in general.
