James Gunn Hints At John Ostrander-Inspired Take On ‘The Suicide Squad’

James Gunn hinted his take on The Suicide Squad may be inspired by John Ostrander’s comic book run in a post on his official Instagram account.

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is currently in the pre-production phase, but fans still know little about the filmmaker’s new take on the supervillain team. However, James Gunn may have suggested his version of the Suicide Squad will be inspired by writer John Ostrander’s run in a photo featuring the director’s collection of comics:

“I have been an enormous fan of #SuicideSquad in all its @DCComics incarnations – but to me there will always be something special about the #JohnOstrander run. Black ops military tales with disposable, often forgotten super villains?! Pure perfection.”

The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker. James Gunn is expected to deliver on the new take on the supervillain team in his upcoming movie, with Idris Elba playing a new character, Jai Courtney reprising his role as Captain Boomerang, Viola Davis returning as Amanda Waller, and John Cena reportedly in talks for an undisclosed role.

The Suicide Squad is one of many projects currently being developed by Warner Bros. and DC. The list also includes The BatmanThe FlashGreen Lantern CorpsBirds of PreyBlack AdamNightwingSupergirl and New Gods.

The Suicide Squad will be released in theaters on August 6, 2021.
