Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn reacted to Martin Scorsese’s recent comments on Marvel movies.
During an interview with Empire Magazine, acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese discussed the Marvel films and explained why he believes they are “not cinema.” While noting that he believes the Marvel films are well made and the actors are doing the best with the material they are given, Martin Scorsese likened the projects to theme park rides and said he couldn’t make it through the superhero movies.
Of course, fans had much to say about Martin Scorsese’s comments and now Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has weighed in on the matter through his official Twitter account. While noting that Martin Scorsese is one of 5 favorite filmmakers, James Gunn stated that he was “saddened” to hear the director judge his Marvel films in the same way audiences reacted to Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ. However, James Gunn added that despite the negative comments on Marvel films, he still loves Martin Scorsese and is looking forward to seeing his next film, The Irishman.

While production on Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was scheduled to begin early this year, the project was put on hold following the decision to remove James Gunn as the director of the final chapter in the trilogy. Now, James Gunn will begin production on the third Guardians of the Galaxy film after completing work on The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. and DC.
Details on the third chapter of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy are currently unknown, though the film will likely explore the ramifications of the universe-changing events in Avengers: Endgame. The film is also set to be the final outing for this current iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Sean Gunn.
