James Gunn Will Still Work With Marvel After ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy 3’

James Gunn has reconfirmed that he'll still be involved with the production of future Marvel movies after directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

James Gunn has reaffirmed that he still plans to work with Marvel Studios after his current commitments with the company expire… Which now include the director’s seat for the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Gunn talked with The Hollywood Reporter about his future plans after the recently-announced Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and the short answer is that he’s not planning quitting Marvel anytime soon:

“[My decision to commit to the third movie] doesn’t mean it will be the end of my relationship with Marvel.”

So Marvel fans can rest easy knowing that Gunn isn’t going anywhere. Gunn has previously expressed interest in doing a Thunderbolts movie, so if he were to outright direct a Marvel movie after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, that would likely be it. Though it may also be that Gunn could step back from directing future movies and that he’d just remain on-board as a producer, as he’s set to do with Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel (as he’s overseeing how the Guardians fit into Marvel’s biggest crossover ever).

Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 blasts off on May 5, 2017. The film stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, Kurt Russell as Ego, and Sylvester Stallone in a spoiler-filled supporting roleGuardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 does not have a release date scheduled, but the earliest window that the second sequel could be released in is 2020.
