James Gunn Teases The End of Rocket’s Arc In ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’

During an interview with Deadline, James Gunn commented on how Rocket Raccoon’s five-film story arc will come to an end in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

When audiences were introduced to Rocket in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the cantankerous Raccoon had little patience or affection for anyone aside from his long-time friend Groot. However, the under-appreciated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 explored the reasons behind Rocket Raccoon’s withdrawn ways as he slowly learned to accept love from others, though his journey was far from complete.

Unfortunately, writer and director James Gunn nearly lost the chance to conclude Rocket Raccoon’s story after controversial tweets he posted years ago prompted Disney to fire him from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Although James Gunn was later reinstated as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the filmmaker explained that he was most upset over losing the chance the bring Rocket Raccoon’s story to an end before Disney decided to bring him back to helm the film:

“When you asked me what was saddest for me when I thought it was gone—and anybody at Marvel can tell you—it’s this very strange and attached relationship to Rocket. Rocket is me, he really is, even if that sounds narcissistic. Groot is like my dog. I love Groot in a completely different way. I relate to Rocket and I feel compassion for Rocket, but I also feel like his story has not been completed. He has an arc that started in the first movie, continued into the second and goes through Infinity War and Endgame, and then I was set to really finish that arc in Guardians 3. That was a big loss to me—not being able to finish that story—though I was comforted by the fact that they were still planning to use my script.”

Are you glad James Gunn will be able to properly conclude Rocket Raccoon’s journey? As someone who also shares a rapport with Rocket, I couldn’t be more thrilled, but you can share your own thoughts in the comments section below!

While production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was scheduled to begin early this year, the project was put on hold following the decision to remove Gunn as the director of the final chapter in the trilogy. Now, James Gunn will begin production on the third Guardians of the Galaxy film after completing work on The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. and DC. Details on the third and final chapter of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy are currently unknown, though the film will likely explore the ramifications of the universe-changing events in Avengers: Endgame.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Sean Gunn.

Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest updates on James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
