James Gunn: “There Will Be No Infinity Stones” In ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy, Vol. 2’

James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy, has previously stated that, unlike that film, there would be no Thanos, shoehorned in or otherwise, in the upcoming sequel Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2. Now, he’s taken to Facebook and confirmed that, also unlike the first film, there will be no Infinity Stones (the gems that power Thanos’ gauntlet, pictured above) featured in the sequel.

Where before Gunn merely said the stones wouldn’t be “a thing” in the new film, the director’s reply to a comment on his Facebok page sealed the deal: no stones in Vol. 2.

“There will be no Infinity Stones in Vol. 2.”

The original Guardians featured the Orb, which contained the purple Power Stone, as a MacGuffin. The Space Stone (the Tesseract), the Reality Stone (the Aether) and the Mind Stone (Loki’s scepter) have also been introduced. It has been heavily implied/rumored that Doctor Strange’s Eye of Agamotto, which manipulates probabilities and is seen in his upcoming film, is the Time Stone, leaving only the Soul Stone unaccounted for. In addition, there are two Infinity Gauntlets in the MCU (unlike the solo one in the comics), one in Odin’s vault in Asgard and the other in Thanos’ possession.

Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol.2‘s synopsis is as cryptic as possible.

Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) tries to find his true father.

Directed by Gunn, Vol. 2 stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, David Bautista, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, Pom Klementieff, Kurt Russell, Glenn Close, Sean Gunn, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, Tommy Flanagan, along with the voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel.
