Warner Bros. Confirms James Gunn Is Writing The Next ‘Suicide Squad’ Film

Warner Bros. has officially confirmed to Polygon that James Gunn will write DC’s next Suicide Squad film.

Yesterday, it was reported that Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was in talks to work on the next Suicide Squad film as a screenwriter with an eye to direct the project as well. Now, Warner Bros. has confirmed that James Gunn “is writing the next installment in the Suicide Squad franchise.”

Gunn will reportedly have a fresh take on the material and Warner Bros. did not confirm if the film will be a direct sequel to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad.

The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, and Jared Leto as The Joker, all three of whom were expected to reprise their roles in the sequel. Although the film earned mixed reviews, at best, it became a box office hit for DC with a worldwide gross of $750 million.

Suicide Squad 2 is one of many projects currently being developed by Warner Bros. and DC Films, including The BatmanThe Flash standalone film, Green Lantern CorpsBirds of PreyBlack AdamCyborgNightwingSupergirl, New Gods, a Deathstroke film, and a Joker origin movie set outside of the DCEU.
