James Gunn On How ‘The Suicide Squad’ Will Differ From ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Musically

Filmmaker James Gunn commented on the music for The Suicide Squad being different from the tunes for the Guardians of the Galaxy films.

James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy films are as well-known for their use of classic songs for their comedic characters and colorful special effects. Of course, this prompted one fan to take to Twitter and ask James Gunn if the Suicide Squad will be “music-heavy” as well.

In response, James Gunn noted that music has been an important component in all of his films, not just the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. However, James Gunn added that The Suicide Squad will be  a lot different than Guardians of the Galaxy both in terms of music and “many other ways.”

While production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was scheduled to begin early this year, the project was put on hold following the decision to remove Gunn as the director of the final chapter in the trilogy. Now, James Gunn will begin production on the third Guardians of the Galaxy film after completing work on The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. and DC.

The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker. James Gunn is expected to deliver on the fresh take on the supervillain team in his upcoming movie, with Idris Elba playing a new character, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Flula Borg, Taika Waititi, and Viola Davis returning as Amanda Waller.

The Suicide Squad will be released in theaters on August 6, 2021.
