James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad Won’t Draw From The New 52

It seems that James Gunn’s version of the Suicide Squad will not draw inspiration from the New 52 continuity, but instead from the original runs from 1980.

James Gunn wants to impress DC fans with his revamped version of the Suicide Squad. After David Ayer’s take on the team back in 2016, using some of the most prominent and infamous members of the Suicide Squad over the years, it seems that James Gunn wants to return to the team’s original roots. According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn’s script for his film draws heavily from the Jon Ostrander and wife Kim Yale 1980 Suicide Squad run.

Ostrander wrote most of the first run from issue #1 to #67. Yale and him co-wrote issues #23–24, #27–32, #34, #36–37, #39–43, #45–66. Although it’s rumored that James Gunn’s film will feature the likes of Peacemaker, Polka-Dot Man, King Shark, Ratcatcher, Deadshot and Harley Quinn, only Deadshot was used by Ostrander and Yale in their run. So, if this rumor is indeed true, James Gunn’s version will definitely be a blend from what we saw early on in the Suidice Squad comic books and these new characters which he thinks are particularly interesting to involve in this new story.

What do you think these new characters can bring to the Suicide Squad? Sound off in the comment section down below!

Following Aquaman, which is now playing, the DCEU continues with Shazam! on April 5, 2019, which will be followed by Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) on February 7, 2020, and Wonder Woman 1984 on June 5, 2020. A standalone Joker film set outside of the DC Films universe starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime is also set to hit theaters October 4, 2019.

Here is the synopsis for DC’s next film, Shazam!:

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

Directed by David F. Sandberg, DC Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Ron Cephas.

Shazam! will be released in theaters on April 5, 2019. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the future of the current DC cinematic universe as we learn it.
