James Gunn On The Suicide Squad Being A Reboot or Sequel: ‘You’ll See’

James Gunn offered a less-than-helpful response to the question of whether The Suicide Squad is a reboot or sequel during an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

James Gunn is set to lend his talent to the DC Extended Universe with a new take on The Suicide Squad, though there has been some uncertainty as to whether the film is a sequel to David Ayer’s movie or if it is a reboot. When asked about this issue during an interview with ET, James Gunn would only offer a vague response and assured fans they will know when The Suicide Squad hits theaters:

“You know, these terms are all so narrow. There’s so many terms. […] It is what it is… you’ll see in two years, when it comes out.”

The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences with an ensemble cast that included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker. James Gunn is expected to deliver on the new take on the supervillain team in his upcoming movie, with Idris Elba playing a new character, Jai Courtney reprising his role as Captain Boomerang, David Dastmalchian playing Polka-Dot Man, and Viola Davis returning as Amanda Waller. John Cena reportedly in talks for an undisclosed role while Michael Rooker is said to be eyed for the role of King Shark.

The Suicide Squad is one of many projects currently being developed by Warner Bros. and DC. The list also includes The BatmanThe FlashGreen Lantern CorpsBirds of PreyBlack AdamNightwingSupergirl and New Gods.

The Suicide Squad will be released in theaters on August 6, 2021.
