Why James Mangold Thinks The ‘Logan’ Ending Is A Happy One

When it was released back in March, Logan was immediately greeted with universal acclaim from critics and audiences alike. Logan was praised for a multitude of reasons, including James Mangold’s impeccable direction, serving as the *perfect* swan song for Wolverine and of course, Hugh Jackman’s final performance as Wolverine.

Not only was the film gripping right from its first shot, but as the film reaches its dramatic finale, audiences realize that there couldn’t have been a more fitting sendoff for Jackman as Logan.

SPOILER WARNING FOR THE ENDING OF LOGAN

Logan ends in a visceral duel between Logan and X-24. This fight is taken to the bloody, brutal end when X-24 impales Logan onto a tree branch. Thankfully, Laura (Dafne Keen) uses the adamantium bullet to kill X-24. Although she is successful, Logan succumbs to his wounds and dies.

The film then concludes with Laura delivering an emotional eulogy about her father-figure and before she leaves along with her fellow mutant friends, re-positions the makeshift cross as an “X”, marking Logan’s burial site as a tribute to him and the X-Men.

Logan and Laura’s final moments together have gone down as some of the most pure, emotional sequences ever filmed in a comic book movie. Despite the film featuring the deaths of both Logan and Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), director Mangold believes that the film’s ending is actually a happy one:

Something gets born of every tragedy. In many ways, I look at the movie and I realize what a happy ending it is. At least from the perspective of Wolverine’s character. I think, unlike anything you have seen in the previous seven or eight movies, he’s happy in his final moments on this earth. He’s happy. He feels somehow satisfied, and I think that’s something very few of us might be able to say in our parting glances from this world. That we suddenly taste and know everything and feel like we got to experience everything. And I think in some way, and Hugh’s performance is really transcendent there, he communicates that and leaves us more moved than bereft.

Logan is now available on Digital HD and will hit stores on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K on May 23.
