James Mangold Explains Professor X’s Obsession With The Quesalupa In…

James Mangold revealed the impetus behind Professor X's obsession with Taco Bell's quesalupa in 'Logan,' and it was largely a product of good timing.

Without a doubt, Logan was a heavy film. Full of pain, loss, and emotion, the film was violent yet poignant. It’s been heralded as powerful and the appropriate end to Hugh Jackman’s run as Wolverine and Patrick Stewart’s run as Professor X.

The two men certainly made the film (with some help from Dafne Keen) and their relationship was difficult to watch as its outward combativeness was laced with a deep layer of love.

But despite all the heavy moments, there were brief glimpses of humor, mostly at Charles’ expense. One of the more humorous through-lines was Professor X’s seeming obsession with Taco Bell’s quesalupa – a part quesadilla, part chalupa, creation. Now, Logan director James Mangold has revealed to HuffPost the impetus for the quesalupa gag:

“The funny story of why that dialogue’s in there is, I was actually offered a Taco Bell commercial while we were in prep,” Mangold said. “And while I was writing the scene, I was looking for Charles to say things — random things — that indicate that he’d been watching TV too much, and I literally had this Taco Bell commercial script on my desk for the new quesalupa from Taco Bell, and in my desperation to get pages done, I just took it and plugged it right in.”

As it turns out, Professor X’s obsession with Taco Bell’s quesalupa didn’t have anything to do with product placement. Instead, it was really just perfect timing. And Mangold also confirmed that, yes, the dialogue was “actual text from an actual Taco Bell commercial.”

Directed by James Mangold, Logan stars Hugh Jackman, Sir Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Stephen Merchant, Richard E. Grant, Eriq LaSalle, Elizabeth Rodriguez, and Boyd Holbrook.

Logan is now available on Digital HD, Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD.
