James Mangold Teased The End Of ‘Logan’ In ‘The Wolverine’

Logan director James Mangold originally teased the end of the new film back in 2013 with his previous film, The Wolverine.

Warning: This article contains a major spoiler for Logan.

Logan director James Mangold originally teased Wolverine’s final moments back in 2013 with The Wolverine, which he also directed.

An observant fan of the franchise took to Twitter to point out the initial tease from The Wolverine to Mangold who then confirmed that the vision the psychic mutant Yukio (Rila Fukushima) shared with Logan was indeed his death from the end of Logan.

In the scene itself, Yukio tells Logan “I see you on your back, there’s blood everywhere. You’re holding your own heart in your hand.” The Wolverine does include a payoff for the initial setup in that Logan does briefly die after he carves out the parasite preventing his healing ability from working from his heart. But now we know that the heart in his hand was actually a poetic metaphor for the hand of his daughter Laura aka X-23.

It’s quite a beautiful and a very clever call back to The Wolverine. As if we needed yet another reason to be sad about the emotionally heavy and incredible end of Logan.

You can read our review of the film here.

Logan is now playing.
