James McAvoy Comments On His And Jennifer Lawrence’s ‘X-Men’ Futures

When signing up for big franchises, actors and actresses typically get a three-picture deal that locks them into sequels, should the first film succeed. This was the case for the X-Men prequels when James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult were hired to anchor the new ensemble beginning with First Class in 2011.

This summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse is the last film on their contracts. Re-negotiations were said to have taken place with McAvoy’s Professor X and Fassbender’s Magneto to continue on, but nothing on Lawrence’s Mystique or Hoult’s Beast, the former of which stated she would not renew her contract. However, she has appeared to reverse her position, recently telling Empire she’s eager for more.

Comic Book Movie translated a French outlet which spoke to McAvoy about Lawrence’s comments and their collective future with the X-Men series.

“Yeah, I’ve heard…people have said she’s not into it, stuff like that,” McAvoy said. “She’s always said to me that she would think about it. So yeah, that sounds great. I hope she does, because I love working with Jennifer. You know, we’ve been like an extended sort of family, in a weird way, for six or seven years now,” he said. “Every two years, we get back together and hang out making a movie, then in six months’ time or a year’s time, we all go on the road promoting it, and we see each other again. I’d be really said not to see her every couple of years.”

McAvoy confirmed he’s willing to return for future X-Men movies.

“If they want me to, I’ll do more, yeah.”

Good news, as the studio has already made plans to put his bald head in Josh Boone’s The New Mutants, rumored for a 2018 release and director Bryan Singer has indicated he would like to direct his fifth X-Men film (est. release 2019) after he wraps production on his adaptation of Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea next year. In the meantime, X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters May 27.
