Aquaman opens in U.S. theaters later this month but fans in China were lucky enough to have the film open there two weeks in advance. This past weekend was Aquaman‘s debut in China and it was far from a disappointment. The DC solo adventure opened to a massive $93.6 million which marks it as the highest opening weekend for any DC film, as well as any Warner Bros. film in general, in China.
Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa), aka Aquaman, infamously had much of his subplot removed from the theatrical cut of 2017’s Justice League. The underwater hero is finally getting his time to shine in his own solo movie and it’s earning big critical buzz and, as stated above, big numbers in China. Director James Wan posted a thank you to fans on Twitter for the incredible opening weekend. Check out Wan’s Tweet below to see his full statement.
Aquaman is expected to be a box office winner when it opens in the U.S. on December 21st but it’s opening during a very crowded week full of films based on properties that are getting great word-of-mouth. A week prior to the DC adventure opening in theaters, the critically-acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse hits theaters. Then the following week, when Aquaman opens, so does Mary Poppins Returns, which has been earning some buzz, as well as Bumblebee. The Transformers prequel, which opens the very same day as Aquaman, has been earning great word-of-mouth from early screenings.
