James Wan Comments On Potential Of An ‘Aquaman’ Cinematic Universe

When you take the bare basics, Aquaman is a guy who swims and talks to the fishes. Between his recent appearances and, more recently, James Wan’s film, perception has shifted. The King of the Seven Seas has joined the billion dollar club, and as such, the possibilities on where to take the franchise are endless as the sea itself.

It’s not that the sky is the limit, but the sea instead. Now that Warner Bros is actively pursuing a spin-off based on The Trench, it’s as if Aquaman’s corner of the DC Extended Universe is being carved out into its own little world. A universe within a universe, if you will. Like comic books, you can tell stories based around this one character that don’t necessarily impact the rest of the world — in this case, the rest of the DCEU. With James Wan’s work in horror and the building out of the Annabelle/Conjuring universe, this should be no surprise.

James Wan no doubt knows this. The Aquaman director is very active on social media, and when the Hollywood Reporter did a story on the potential of an Aquaman cinematic universe, this did not go unnoticed by James Wan. Last night, the director took to his Twitter and retweeted the article, thanking the site for their words and reiterating that his work does not affect other projects from being made. To Wan, Aquaman was always about building a bigger world within itself, as there are many adventures within the Seven Seas.

But then Wan made sure to say that he’s not saying this is actually happening. In other words, he can neither confirm nor deny this. Nonetheless, have a look at what James Wan had to say in the tweet below.

Given James Wan’s ability to carve out a world, as seen through his horror background, it’s indeed possible for Aquaman’s corner of the DCEU to be expanded without impacting the other areas. Again, like reading a comic book, taking a look at this week’s Aquaman comic doesn’t necessarily mean that what’s happening in Gotham City will be impacted. Still, though, it appears that Warner Bros wants to strike while the iron is hot, especially after Wan delivered a billion dollar film.

What do you think about the possibility of James Wan helping shape Aquaman’s corner of the DC Extended Universe? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Aquaman is still playing in a few theaters now, but the film will be available on Digital HD on March 5, followed by 4K and Blu-Ray on March 26.
