James Wan Reveals How Much Of ‘Aquaman’ Was Formatted To IMAX

The Dark Knight was one of the earliest Hollywood pictures to be shot in IMAX, and this trend has continued well after Christopher Nolan helped lead the charge back in 2008. And now with James Wan’s Aquaman upon us, and with that film playing in IMAX theaters, the question does arise: how much of the film was formatted to that IMAX aspect ratio? After all, moviegoers prefer the best moviegoing experience possible, and that would include seeing it in the best aspect ratio that’s available.

This includes when the film makes its way to home release when you can watch it from the comfort of your own home without other audience members. But if you don’t have the right setup, you may get those black bars on your screen that many loathe. With the final trailer for Aquaman dropping yesterday, director James Wan has already assured moviegoers that what they’ve seen doesn’t even begin to break the dam as far as what they should expect for the upcoming DC film.

But let’s get back to the technical aspect of things. While Aquaman will be released in and play on IMAX screens, just how much of that film was actually converted to that format? Well, one curious fan on Twitter took it upon themselves to ask James Wan on Twitter by tagging his handle and asking if there are any scenes in the full IMAX aspect ratio. Wan responded, stating that 90 percent of Aquaman was formatted to the IMAX ratio. Almost the entire film, even. Here, check out Wan’s response in the tweet below.

Well, to borrow from Jaws, you’re gonna need a bigger movie screen. And maybe a boat, too, when you arrive on shore to see Aquaman on IMAX screens. With this in mind, how do you plan to see Aquaman? In the standard format? In 3D? Or maybe you’ll shell out a few extra clams for the IMAX experience? Either way, it seems that IMAX may be the way to go for moviegoers to fully soak up the Aquaman experience. Let us know how you intend to see the film in the comments below.

Directed by James Wan, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Nicole Kidman.

The film will swim into theaters on December 21, 2018.
