Jared Leto discussed just how hard the Joker role was and that he wasn't quite sure if he had things under control or if things were the other way around.
“I took a pretty deep dive. But this was a unique opportunity and I couldn’t imagine doing it any other way. It was fun playing those psychological games. But at the same time, it was very painful, like giving birth out of my p—- hole.”
Jared Leto then revealed some of his techniques he used to prepare for the role which included listening to 1920s music at night and read literature on Shamans. He jokingly told the site that he got the “impression that Joker may be older than people think”. There’s been plenty of talk about how different Leto’s take on the character is and the actor briefly commented on that by stating that it’s “something different. If you don’t break rules, you’re not going to strike new ground.”
By now it’s clear that Jared Leto committed heavily to the role. When asked if he was going to be ‘cooling down’ after the “Method Joking” that the role required, Leto let out a laugh before saying that he’ll likely “be cooling down” for the “rest of his life” after this one. Director David Ayer also added the following about what’s different about this incarnation of the character than what we’ve seen before on the big-screen.
“The Joker is the third rail of comic book movies. There’s a power to that character, and by some freaking miracle, through the incredible things Jared has done and the photography and all the other millions of things that went into it, we’ve cooked up something transcendent. He’s scary.”
