Thor: Ragnarok has a pretty large cast of well-known actors. The third film in Marvel’s Thor trilogy reunites Avengers Thor and Hulk for a cosmic adventure across the nine realms. Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo will reprise their roles as Thor and Hulk respectively, with Tom Hiddleston reprising his role as Thor’s trickster brother, Loki.
Aside from the returning stars, Thor: Ragnarok will also feature newcomers Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Karl Urban as Skurge the Executioner, and Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster. Though every role is important, Goldblum’s is the one with perhaps the most implications for the future of the MCU.
Goldblum is completely aware of this, which is why he’s apparently been hard at work researching for the role. What better way to do that than reading old Thor comics?
The actor has been reading comics from Thor’s past to prepare for his upcoming Thor: Ragnarok role. The comic in the picture above, The Mighty Thor #347, doesn’t actually feature the Grandmaster. However, the comic’s writer, Walter Simonson, is a big influence on the MCU Thor films, so it makes sense for Jeff Goldblum to be reading his work.
For those who don’t know, the Grandmaster is one of the oldest living beings in the Marvel universe. He’s known for his expert skills in manipulation, usually pitting two or more people against each other in order to come out on top. He’s manipulated the Avengers, the Defenders, and even the Justice League in a Marvel/DC crossover event.
The Grandmaster’s role in Thor: Ragnarok has yet to be revealed, but it’s likely something to do with Thanos. Both characters are old and powerful eternal beings, and in the comics, Thanos actually stole the Mind Gem (the one currently implanted in Vision in the MCU) from Grandmaster.
We’ll know what Jeff Goldblum’s character is up to when Thor Ragnarok releases in theaters November 3, 2017!
