Filming for The Batman is now underway in the United Kingdom. Last week, we got out first look at Robert Pattinson in the Batsuit. On Friday, set photos started to surface online, which offered an even better look at what director Matt Reeves has is store for The Batman. It has been rumored that Matt Reeves will be taking inspiration from The Long Halloween for The Batman, but Jeffrey Wright’s research seems to suggest some other comic book influences.
Jeffrey Wright is set to take over the Commissioner Gordon role from J.K. Simmons for The Batman. As filming continues, Jeffrey Wright shared an image on his Instagram of Batman: The Golden Age Vol. 1. The Batman trade paperback collects the early years of The Dark Knight with Detective Comics #27-45, Batman #1-3, and New York World’s Fair Comics #2 from creators Bill Finger and Bob Kane. These issues notably feature the debut of Commissioner Gordon, Robin, Hugo Strange, The Joker, Catwoman, and others. You can see Jeffrey Wright’s Batman research post below.

Full plot details on The Batman are currently under wraps, though the film will center around a younger Bruce Wayne and feature a Rogues’ Gallery of villains that includes Catwoman, The Penguin, and The Riddler. The Matt Reeves film will follow Batman during his formative years as Gotham City’s protector and will make use of the Dark Knight’s detective skills to a greater extent than previous DC films. It is expected to be the first chapter in a new trilogy with Robert Pattinson as Batman.
Directed by Matt Reeves from a script he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
The Batman opens in theaters on June 25, 2021.
