Jim Broadbent Joins ‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 7 In “Significant” Role

Game of Thrones has cast its first new actor for season 7 and he is right in their wheelhouse. EW reports it is Jim Broadbent, the venerable British actor and Oscar winner known for such roles in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, a couple later Harry Potters and Cloud Atlas.

As with all things Thrones-y, this is shrouded in secrecy; even the casting calls recently discovered are reportedly deliberately misleading. All that is known about Broadbent’s role in the seven-episode penultimate season is that it is “significant.” Whether that is in plot impact (like the one-episode-and-done Brother Ray aka Ian McShane) or screen time (like Jonathan Pryce’s High Sparrow) is unknown.

Since the show has completely exhausted its A Song of Ice and Fire source material and with author George R.R. Martin’s sixth volume The Winds of Winter still without a release date, this is the first season TV viewers and book readers are both completely in the dark.

As a fanatic of both the mediums, I can only speculate on Broadbent’s role. Perhaps a leader of the Order of Maesters, the institution Samwell Tarly intends to train with after they reached Oldtown in the season 6 finale. Perhaps he is the head of a royal house who becomes entangled in the new regimes of King in the North Jon Snow. Mad Queen Cersei Lannister or Dragon Queen Daenerys Targaryen.

Game of Thrones season 7 has just begun filming and will premiere next summer. For more season 7 coverage, like the episode directors and the showrunners’ comments, check out the links. Got an idea who Broadbent is playing? Let us know in the comments!
