Speaking with ScreenCrush about his work on Ritesh Batra’s upcoming drama film The Sense of an Ending, Broadbent revealed that he’s set to appear in five of this year’s seven episodes of Game of Thrones as an archmaester. Here’s what he told the site:
“I’m a maester, an archmaester. I’m an old professor character.”
The actor also revealed that he shares his scenes with John Bradley, who plays Samwell Tarly. Many fans predicted Broadbent would portray a maester on Game of Thrones, but we weren’t quite sure about that until now. My best guess would be that Broadbent is Maester Marwyn from George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, but I wouldn’t be surprised if his role is a composite of several characters from the books.
HBO has yet to announce when exactly Game of Thrones will return for its seventh season, but Liam Cunningham recently mentioned that it could debut this July, confirming what we previously knew about the show premiering this summer. We also haven’t seen any footage from this season, but a teaser can’t be too far away, so stay tuned for updates.
