The Batman Forever director passed away at the age of 80.
Joel Schumacher took over the DC franchise from director Tim Burton, who previously helmed Batman and its gritty sequel Batman Returns. Schumacher instilled the DC series with humor and levity, all the while pushing the boundaries of the character. His first foray into the Bat universe was with Batman Forever, a film that introduced Val Kilmer into the titular role. Schumacher also brought the ever popular Jim Carrey into the shoes of The Riddler. After the director’s passing made headlines on Monday afternoon, Carrey took to Twitter to mourn his Batman Forever helmer.
In his tweet, Jim Carrey fondly remembers how the director inspired him and saw things in his when others didn’t. While the project was well received in 1995, at the height of Carrey’s career, the Canadian comedian didn’t return as The Riddler for the DC film’s maligned sequel Batman and Robin. Carrey and Joel Schumacher eventually reunited together for the 2007 thriller The Number 23 which was poorly received at the time of its release but has gathered a cult following in recent years. Carrey most recently starred as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic The Hedgehog.
