Paramount Dates New ‘Star Trek’ Film From J.J. Abrams For 2023

Star Trek is heading back to the big screen!

Paramount announced a new Star Trek film is in the works from JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot and set for a Summer 2023 release.

Since the release of Star Trek Beyond in 2016, the franchise has been in limbo on the big screen, with television becoming a focus once again for the IP. However, Paramount has been developing a few films with names like Quentin Tarantino and Noah Hawley, but both seem dead. In the Kelvin timeline, a fourth film was also planned at one point, with Chris Hemsworth coming back as Captain Kirk’s father. Now Paramount appears to be moving forward with a new film from producer JJ Abrams.

The next Star Trek film from JJ Abrams is scheduled to hit theaters on June 9, 2023. i09 reports the newly announced Star Trek film isn’t the same project as the one written by Kalinda Vazquez. It’s also unclear if this project will occur in the Kelvin timeline, follow the original timeline, or be a reboot.

Here is the synopsis for Star Trek Beyond:

From Director Justin Lin and Producer J.J. Abrams comes one of the best-reviewed action movies of the year. Dispatched on a rescue mission to the farthest reaches of space, the USS Enterprise is ambushed by Krall, a ruthless enemy sworn against the Federation. Crash-landing on an uncharted hostile world, Captain Kirk, Spock and the crew are separated with no means of escape.  Only Jaylah, a rebellious alien warrior, can help them reunite and find a way off the planet in a race against time to stop Krall’s deadly army from triggering all-out galactic war.

Directed by Justin Lin from a script written by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, the JJ Abrams-produced film stars John Cho, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, and Idris Elba.
