After Marvel Studios and Sony made the landmark deal to co-produce new Spider-Man films set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the studios set out to differentiate this new incarnation of the wall-crawler from the previous on-screen versions. This decision resulted in certain key elements and characters in comic book lore being omitted from Spider-Man: Homecoming, including Daily Bugle editor-in-chief J. Jonah Jameson.
Traditionally depicted as the temperamental employer of Peter Parker who openly derides Spider-Man as a menace to the city of New York, many fans continue to hope J. Jonah Jameson will be introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, some have suggested J. K. Simmon reprise the role after having portrayed J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films to widespread acclaim.
Now, The Hollywood Reporter’s Aaron Couch has shared a photo of J. K. Simmons’ attending the premiere of Spider-Man: Far From Home. While this is by no means a sign that J. K. Simmons will return to play J. J. Jonah Jameson in the new Spider-Man films, his presence will likely raise the hopes of fans who wish it to be so.
