Joaquin Phoenix’s ‘Joker’ Long Range Box Office Forecast Predicts $100M Opening Weekend

A long-range box office forecast predicts a $100 million opening weekend for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker.

Over the past weekend, Joker debuted at the Venice Film Festival to rave reviews by critics who praised Joaquin Phoenix’s take on the villain and precited the film would be game-changer for comic book adaptations. Of course, not everyone was impressed by Joker and some have expressed concern that the Joaquin Phoenix film could inspire certain men to commit acts of violence due to its “incel friendly” themes.

Either way, the online discourse has resulted in an increased interest in Joker and now Box Office Pro reports the Joaquin Phoenix film is on course to gross $100 million+ in its opening weekend. If this prediction proves to be correct, Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker would become the first $100 million+ opener in October history and at this rate, it will almost certainly become one the highest-grossing debuts for an R-rated feature.

Here is the official synopsis for Joker:

Director Todd Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fracturedsociety. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.

Joker will be released in theaters on October 4, 2019.
