The upcoming Joker standalone film directed by Todd Phillips will be Warner Bros. first venture outside of the current DC cinematic universe since Zack Snyder kicked it off back in 2013 with Man of Steel, as the studio expands DC canon with new and unique storylines. The origin story will be a gritty and grounded crime film set in 1980s Gotham City, as it follows Phoenix as Arthur Fleck: a failed 1980s comedian who becomes The Joker after bombing with audiences. The film has been officially described the film as an “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.”
Joker ranked in tenth place in the poll conducted by Fandango for USA Today behind other major comic book properties such as Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel, and Spider-Man: Far From Home, as well as the final installment of the Skywalker Saga, Star Wars: Episode IX. Fandango polled over 3,500 frequent moviegoers to gather the data. You can check out the full results for 2019’s most anticipated films below.
