Director Todd Phillips’ Joker looks to be a grounded take on the classic Batman foe and while Joaquin Phoenix’s Clown Prince of Crime will be the central figure of the film, there will also be appearances by other comic book characters such as Thomas Wayne. Now, fans have spotted what they believe to be a nod to The Riddler, one of Batman’s other foes, in the shot of Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck in an elevator. The shot in question features writing scribbled on the elevator wall and a green question mark, which fans suspect could be a reference to the Riddler, the Batman villain known for leaving clues behind his crime scenes for authorities and the World’s Greatest Detective to solve.
Do you think the question mark is intended to be a nod to the Riddler? Share your thoughts in the comments section below!
“Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.
Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
Joker will be released in theaters on October 4, 2019.
