Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker Gets ‘Killing Joke’ Look In New Image

Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck gets a classic Joker look with a Batman: The Killing Joke-influenced makeover in new fan art.

Todd Philips’ Joker is about seven months away from release and there are no rumors circulating when the first footage could hit, but the film remains an interesting project amongst fans. The upcoming film is said to be the first DC film under a new label, which will focus on standalone, Elseworlds stories.

Joaquin Phoenix’s look was revealed when filming began and many set photos surfaced over the film’s principal photography as well. Phoenix’s appearance is similar to Heath Ledger’s but without the scars and a different colored suit, similar to Cesar Romero’s Joker. Some DC fans were hoping for a classic look inspired by a famous comic book like Batman: The Killing Joke and new art from Dalton Barrett shows what that could look like:

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, the film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.

“Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.

Joker will be released in theaters on October 4, 2019.
