Joaquin Phoenix’s ‘Joker’ Long Range Box Office Tracking Revealed

Two months out from its release, Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker film appears to be heading for a $60 – $90 million debut at the box office.

The upcoming Joker film starring Joaquin Phoenix is set to be DC Films’ first venture outside its current shared cinematic universe in an effort to create new and unique storylines as Warner Bros. expands DC canon. According to Box Office Pro, the Joaquin Phoenix film is set estimated to gross somewhere between $60 and $90 million in its opening weekend. At the very least, this would place the film’s opening DC’s most recent superhero film, Shazam! which managed $53 million in its debut. Joker also appears to have a chance of beating the opening weekend for Aquaman ($67M), which went on to join the billion-dollar club at the global box office.

Todd Phillips’ upcoming Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix is set to be an origin story. The gritty and grounded crime film set in 1980s Gotham City follows Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck who is a failed 1980s comedian that becomes The Joker after he bombs with audiences. Joker has been officially described by Warner Bros. as an “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.” It will also serve as DC’s first outing beyond its the current cinematic universe since it was launched by Zack Snyder in 2013 with Man of Steel in order to create new and unique storylines as the studio expands DC canon.

Joker is one of the many projects in the works at Warner Bros. and DC Films, including The Batman, The Flash standalone film, Black Adam, Supergirl, New Gods, Batgirl, and Birds of Prey.

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.

“Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.
