Joaquin Phoenix’s ‘Joker’ Script Doesn’t Name Killer Of Batman’s Parents

The script for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker doesn’t name the killer of Batman’s parents in the finale of the film.

While Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker was never going to be a comic-accurate tale in the same vein as other DC or Marvel adaptations, it’s still surprising to learn that the script doesn’t name the killer of Batman’s parents at the end of the critically acclaimed film. Warner Bros. recently released the script for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker as part of the film’s Oscar campaign. But fans quickly noticed that the script left out an important detail in Batman’s tragic backstory.

While the riots inspired by Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck rage through Gotham City at the end of Joker, Bruce Wayne and his  parents try escape down an alleyway after leaving a theater. But the man that follows them into the alley and murders Batman’s parents isn’t named as Joe Chill as he is in the comics, instead he’s left anonymous. But since the killer was wearing one of the clown masks, it’s still easy to tie their deaths back to the Clown Prince of Crime.

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham. The DC Films movie is not part of the DC Extended Universe, and seems to play into Warner Bros.’s interests of making creator-driven superhero movies over necessarily building a hyper-connected shared universe… At least for the time being.

Joker is still playing in theaters and is currently available to watch on digital formats. The movie will see a release on Blu-Ray and DVD on January 7, 2020.
