Joe Russo Says ‘Avengers’ Films Were About Last Four Years Of U.S. Politics

Joe Russo explained how his Avengers films were based on real-life events from the last few years.

Joe Russo recently explained how Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame relate to events that occurred in the U.S. from the past four years.

Plenty of comic book films from the past have tackled political themes like Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight or Watchmen. Marvel Studios’ films have also had plenty of social commentaries themselves, and director Joe Russo opened up about what his Avengers films had to say about recent events.

In an interview with The Guardian, Joe Russo explained how Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame tackled recent events in both the U.S. and U.K. politics:

“Those movies are very much about what went on in this country over the past four years. They were about standing up for what you believe in, irrespective of the cost, and I think we’re losing sight of that. For some reason, in the UK and in the US, some of the worst people were being attracted to politics and were representing us collectively. It was affecting our collective mental health, and it was reflecting poorly on our character. We believed strongly that the reach in those movies was so significant that they could be influential in helping people make potentially make better decisions. We thought that they were a really powerful tool, at exactly the right time.”
