Last night at the Oscars, Scarlett Johansson revealed that she texts Joss Whedon all the time about doing the long overdue Black Widow solo film when she was asked if she had talked Whedon since he went on record last summer when he said he would return to the Marvel cinematic universe if given the chance to helm a standalone Black Widow film. Johansson told MTV News:
“We talk about it all the time. We text eachother back and forth [laughs]. Little spidey emojis.”

Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff has been one of the most popular characters in the franchise for years with Johansson consistently turning in standout performances. Couple that with her star power and it seems likely a solo Black Widow film will happen eventually.
The widow program would be worth exploring as it would tell the origin of Black Widow and how she was molded into the formidable assassin audiences know her as is today. In the comics, Natasha Romanoff was trained by the Winter Soldier himself, Bucky Barnes. The connection between the two was already teased last year in Captain America: Civil War when Romanoff said to Bucky “You could at least recognize me”, so the seeds are already there. Marvel doesn’t usually drop teases without paying them off even if it is years later before they do.
What do you Marvel buffs think? Will a Black Widow solo film ever happen? If so, what other storylines from the comics do you think would be worth exploring?
