John Boyega Lands Lead In ‘Pacific Rim’ Sequel

Are you ready to cancel the apocalypse again? Well, if the news that Steven DeKnight would be directing the sequel to the 2013 film wasn’t enough to get you on board, this bit of casting new just might. Deadline is reporting that John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) has landed the lead role in the upcoming sequel and will also act as a producer on the film. Boyega will be playing the son of Idris Elba’s ‘Stacker Pentecoat’ from the original and took to Twitter to confirm the casting news himself.

Guillermo Del Toro, who directed the first entry and co-created the world alongside Travis Beacham but will only act as a producer on the sequel, had the following to say about this casting news.

I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.

Production is set to begin later this year but no further details are currently known about the project and no release date has currently been set. Sound off with your thoughts on this casting news in the comments section below.
