Speaking with TheWrap, John Cena remained tight-lipped, refraining from confirming or denying his casting, going as far to say that joining the cast of The Suicide Squad “would be a tremendous opportunity for growth.” He added:
“You have to get everything buttoned up before you can make it official, I don’t want to say anything … I will just say that if that opportunity presents itself, then I will be very grateful to take it.”
John Cena was reported as being eyed for the upcoming James Gunn film, however, details on which character he could be playing in The Suicide Squad remains under wraps. However, the role itself was revealed to have been originally intended for Dave Bautista, who has worked with James Gunn on the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.
James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is set to feature David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, and Idris Elba in an undisclosed role. Idris Elba is, however, rumored to be playing Bronze Tiger.
James Gunn will reportedly shoot The Suicide Squad before he moves back to Marvel Studios in order to complete the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy with the third installment.
Plot details for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad remain under wraps. An earlier draft of the script was rumored to center on the supervillain team’s mission to find a terrifying new Weapon of Mass Destruction that happened to be Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam.
Warrior director Gavin O’Connor was previously set to write and direct Suicide Squad 2 with Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, and Will Smith having been confirmed to return for the sequel. James Gunn, however, will have an entirely new take on the team-up film, with a new squad that will only see the return of specific members of the original cast including Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flagg, and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.
