John Cena’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ Role Was Originally For Dave Bautista

Variety’s Justin Kroll revealed the Suicide Squad role John Cena is in talks to play was originally intended for Dave Bautista.

Earlier today, it was reported Bumblebee star John Cena is in talks to join James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, though details on the role for which the wrestler-turned-actor is being eyed were kept under wraps. Now, Justin Kroll has taken to Twitter to reveal the role in question was originally intended for Dave Bautista, but the Guardians of the Galaxy star had to pass due to his busy work schedule. Kroll also noted that while he could not confirm which role John Cena is in talks to play, he believes the character to be DC’s Peacemaker.

Dave Bautista’s upcoming slate of projects includes Dune, Army of the Dead, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker. James Gunn is expected to deliver on the new take on the supervillain team with his upcoming movie with Idris Elba playing a new character, Jai Courtney reprising his role as Captain Boomerang and Viola Davis returning as Amanda Waller.

The Suicide Squad is one of many projects currently being developed by Warner Bros. and DC. The list also includes The BatmanThe FlashGreen Lantern CorpsBirds of PreyBlack AdamNightwingSupergirl and New Gods.

The Suicide Squad will be released in theaters on August 6, 2021.
