John Hurt, Two Time Oscar Nominee, Dies At 77

Legendary actor John Hurt has died at age 77 after battling cancer for over a year, according to Mirror Online.

Famous on both the big and small screen, John Hurt’s career spanned over six decades, with the highlights being his roles in The Elephant Man, Harry Potter, Hellboy and Doctor Who.  Hurt’s first prominent role was in 1996’s A Man For All Seasons. Afterwards, he began to star in many prolific Hollywood films such as Alien, Heaven’s Gate, and the voice of Aragorn in the animated Lord of the Rings film.

John Hurt claimed two Academy Award nominations, one for his role in The Elephant Man and the other for Midnight Express.  He has also won a Golden Globe for the latter.

In June 2015, John Hurt announced that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He also received his knighthood that very year. When speaking with The Radio Times, Hurt proclaimed he wasn’t afraid of death.

“I can’t say I worry about mortality, but it’s impossible to get to my age and not have a little contemplation of it. We’re all just passing time, and occupy our chair very briefly. But my treatment is going terrifically well, so I’m optimistic.”

John Hurt is survived by his fourth wife of 12 years, Anwen Rees-Myers and sons Alexander and Nicholas.
