John Williams Suggests ‘Episode IX’ Will Be His Last Star Wars Film

After being the main force behind the iconic Star Wars music since 1977, composer John Williams may be exiting the franchise after Episode IX.

Legendary composer John Williams has been an essential ingrediant to the success of Star Wars ever since A New Hope premiered in 1977. Williams has composed the music for all eight of the Skywalker Saga films, and will be conducting new scores for both Solo: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: Episode IX. That’s a lot of Star Wars, and now it appears the time has finally come for Williams to retire from the franchise.

In an interview with Classical KUSC, Williams discusses his time with the franchise, and indicates that he may finally be calling it quits after he finishes the Episode IX score:

“We know J.J. Abrams is preparing one now that I will hopefully do next year for him. I look forward it. It will round out a series of nine, that will be quite enough for me.”

Of course, a lot can change between now and when Episode IX opens in 2019, but as Williams says in the interview, Disney will most likely keep the Star Wars franchise chugging for decades to come, so it would only make sense for Williams to bow out at what may very well be the conclusion of the nine film Skywalker Saga.

Will you be sad when Williams inevitably exits the franchise? Who do you think could replace him? Let us know in the comments!

Star Wars: Episode IX will hit theaters on December 20, 2019. Fans won’t have to wait long to get their John Williams Star Wars fix as Solo hits theaters on May 25 and will feature a main title composed by the franchise veteran. Stay tuned for the latest news from a galary far, far away.
