Will John Williams Return For ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’?

John Williams converses with ‘The Force Awakens’ director J.J. Abrams.

Legendary composer John Williams returned to a galaxy far, far away with his most recent score for J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The score showcased some new themes for our new heroes and villains, and also called back to familiar themes that resonated with us since the 1970’s.

With the musical score Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story being composed by Alexandre Desplat – signaling a new era in iconic Star Wars music, one is left to wonder whether or not John Williams would return for Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII.

At a recent concert with the Philadelphia orchestra, Williams mentioned the upcoming Episode VIII.

“I told the producers I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do the next one, but told them I didn’t want anyone else doing it either.”  It was certainly meant as a joke, and got a great laugh.”

So it seems as though Williams’ involvement in Rey’s next steps into a larger world are currently up in the air. The original announcement of Williams’ attachment to The Force Awakens also included Episode VIII and Colin Trevorrow’s Episode IX, so let’s hope that through the power of the force, the legend who has scored the likes of Superman, Indiana Jones, Jaws, and Harry Potter, that he will come back for another adventure in George Lucas’ iconic galaxy. After all, in the grand scheme of things, it isn’t Star Wars without his music – for it’s always served like a character in and of itself.

Directed by Rian Johnson and starring Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran, Star Wars: Episode VIII opens in theatres December 15, 2017.
