It has been reported that Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker will be the first film under a new DC Films banner due to it taking place outside of the DCEU. DC Comics is well-known for their alternate dimensions and Elseworlds stories and it seems Joker will be playing into that. Geeks WorldWide’s Caleb Williams shared on Twitter that the Joker CinemaCon footage revealed Arkham Asylum has been changed to Arkham State Hospital in the film. In the footage, Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck is said to be visiting a social worker who cares for him at the facility.
Of course, Arkham Asylum is the home to Batman’s imprisoned Rogues Gallery. Arkham Asylum has also appertained in live action multiple times over the years. Most recently, Arkham Asylum appeared on the big screen in Suicide Squad.
Do you think the Joker will feature other Batman villains as patients? How else will the film mix up the Batman mythos? Sound off in the comments below!
Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
“Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.
Joker will be released in theaters on October 4, 2019. But before that Warner Bros. has Shazam! set to hit theaters this Friday, which will be followed by Wonder Woman 1984 on June 5, 2020.
Joker is one of the many projects in the works at Warner Bros. and DC Films, including The Batman, The Flash standalone film, Green Lantern Corps, Black Adam, Supergirl, New Gods, Batgirl, and Birds of Prey.
Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the new Joker movie featuring Joaquin Phoenix in the starring role as well as the future of the DC slate as we learn it.
