Director Todd Phillips’ Joker is set to screen at the 44th Toronto International Film Festival as a Gala Presentation and Joaquin Phoenix will be there for the DC film’s North American premiere. Today, Toronto Film Festival co-heads Joana Vicente and Cameron Bailey announced Joaquin Phoenix will receive one of the two TIFF Tribute Actor Awards at this year’s TIFF Tribute Gala awards event.
The Gala will take place on Monday, September 9 at Fairmont Royal York, with Meryl Streep receiving the second Tribute Actor Award. In an official statement, Cameron Bailey commended Joaquin Phoenix for his performances over the past three decades and expressed his excitement for audiences to witness his take on the Clown Prince of Crime in Joker:
“Displaying both raw instinct and consummate technical skill, Joaquin Phoenix is the complete actor, and one of the finest in contemporary cinema. Over three decades, he has brought a piercing truth to each groundbreaking role. TIFF is thrilled to be celebrating an artist of his calibre with this inaugural award. We can’t wait for Festival audiences to experience his electric turn in Joker.”
The Toronto International Film Festival will be held from September 5 to September 15. Showtimes for Joker will be announced when the Toronto International Film Festival unveils its full schedule on August 20.

“Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.
Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
Joker will be released in theaters on October 4, 2019.
