Jon Favreau Confirms ‘The Lion King’ Is Not A Shot-For-Shot Remake

Jon Favreau revealed his upcoming remake of The Lion King with photo-realistic animals will not be shot-for-shot and says some surprises are in store.

Disney’s upcoming remake of The Lion King from Iron Man director Jon Favreau is one of the most anticipated movies coming this year. Two trailers have been released for the film so far, both featuring iconic imagery from the original 1994 animated film recreated with photo-realistic animals.

2019’s The Lion King footage has been widely praised, although some worry the film will just be a shot-for-shot remake. Jon Favreau confirmed to USA Today that will not be the case:

“The original holds up incredibly well. so the challenge here was to tell a story in a different way but still deliver on people’s expectations while surprising them somehow.”

Directed by Jon Favreau from a script written by Jeff Nathanson, The Lion King features the voice talents of Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé as Nala, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa , Billy Eichner as Timon, John Kani as Rafiki, John Oliver as Zazu, Alfre Woodard as Sarabi, Keegan-Michael Key as Kamari, Eric Andre as Azizi, Florence Kasumba as Shenzi, and James Earl Jones returning as Mufasa.

The Lion King tells the story of a young cub named Simba, who is manipulated into fleeing the pride lands he was destined to rule after his uncle Scar murders King Mufasa and convinces the prince that he is responsible for his own father’s death. After meeting two eccentric companions and reuniting with childhood friend Nala, an adult Simba finds himself confronted with the choice of remaining in exile or returning home to end the tyrannical rule of Scar and take his rightful place as King.
