‘The Mandalorian’ Showrunner Jon Favreau Would Love To Do A Disney+ ‘Star Wars’ Holiday Special

The Mandalorian showrunner Jon Favreau confessed in a recent interview that he would love to do a Star Wars Holiday Special for Disney+.

The Star Wars Holiday Special was aired on TV a year after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope back in 1978. The Holiday Special is notorious for being one of the worst things to come out of the franchise, but it was also the first appearance of Boba Fett. Star Wars actors like Mark Hamill have openly criticized the special over the years, but that hasn’t stopped fans from watching it. Star Wars live-action will return to TV soon, with Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian on Disney+.

After many years of development, this year will finally see the debut of a live-action Star Wars television series. The Mandalorian will be one of the main shows apart of Disney+’s launch in November. At the Saturn Awards, The Mandalorian‘s Jon Favreau revealed to Entertainment Tonight’s Ash Crossan that he would love to see a new Star Wars Holiday Special come to Disney+.

Despite the negative perception, the Holiday Special still has its fair share of influences. In fact, The Mandalorian’s weapon in the upcoming series is inspired by the one Boba Fett used in the special. Since Disney took control of the franchise, Star Wars around the Holiday season has become a new tradition due to the film’s release dates.

The series was written by Jon Favreau, who also serves as an executive producer alongside Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson. Karen Gilchrist is also on board as a co-executive producer.

Dave Filoni will direct the first episode of the series and additional episodes will be helmed by Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi, Jurassic World star Bryce Dallas Howard, Dope director Rick Famuyiwa, and Jessica Jones episode director Deborah Chow.

Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian will premiere on November 12, 2019, exclusively on Disney+.
