Jon Watts Reveals That The MCU Has An Official Timeline Scroll

'Spider-Man: Homecoming' director Jon Watts reveals that there is now a timeline scroll that goes through the events of the MCU narrative.

Since 2008, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has continued to expand. It is sometimes hard to believe that film by film, each new entry within this franchise has showcased a distinct aspect of this landscape and with the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War on the horizon, every aspect of the MCU will coalesce into this major event nearly 10 years in the making.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is the latest chapter in the MCU. Now that Peter Parker (Tom Holland) has finally swung into the same league of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, aspects of his young life are now intertwined with his fellow heroic counterparts like Tony Stark and Steve Rogers.

Jon Watts, who directed Spider-Man: Homecoming recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly to promote the upcoming film. When he was hired for the project, he was granted special access to see a special timeline scroll that explores the canon of the MCU:

“There’s an actual scroll that they unrolled for me. One of my producers, Eric Carroll, it was his first job at Marvel to work on a timeline and see where things line up and see where things didn’t quite line up. Like, ‘Oh, that’s when Captain America is born.’”

Although the first MCU film released was Iron Man in 2008, events involving characters such as Thor and Captain America took place first. This is similar to how Man of Steel is the first official entry within the DC Extended Universe, but Wonder Woman is the first film in chronological order.

Watts revealed that this MCU timeline scroll has quite an extensive length:

“Uh yes, it’s very long. It’s the most amazing thing because it starts, honestly, at the beginning of time — I don’t remember specifically, but I think it has something to do with Thor. It is truly an amazing document.”

Although Marvel has not made this scroll public yet, hopefully they can release it online in the near future and can continuously be updated whenever a new film and television series is released.

Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters on July 7, 2017.
