Director Jon Watts reveals that Spider-Man's new costume has a Marvel easter egg worth checking, Be warned mild spoilers ahead.
Spider-Man gets a suit upgrade courtesy of Tony Stark in Captain America: Civil War. The suit is a huge upgrade over the hoodie Peter was wearing previously. The suit features hundreds of upgrades and one unbelievable Easter egg.
In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Peter unlocks some more advanced gadgets in his suit. This includes over 500 web combinations as well as an AI system named Karen. If you think Karen’s voice sounds familiar it’s because that is Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Connelly. It doesn’t stop there, Connelly is married to Paul Bettany, who played Tony Stark’s original AI (Jarvis) and later became the Vision.
It’s something that might go unnoticed, but it’s a great nod nonetheless. Director Jon Watts spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the reference saying:
“Yes, it’s Jarvis’ wife. It’s cool, right?”
Pretty cool indeed. Marvel is taking Spider-Man is a new direction with Homecoming. Spider-Man hasn’t had artificial intelligence assist him in any of the previous 5 films. It’ll be interesting to see how fans respond to this change.
There’s no word if Karen is a reference to Plankton’s computer wife on Spongebob Squarepants, but a guy can dream.

Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters this Friday.
