Get Out became a cultural phenomenon when it hit theaters in 2017. Jordan Peele’s directorial debut was an instant hit amongst critics and moviegoers alike, resulting in Get Out being nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards the following year. It didn’t win that award, but Jordan Peele did walk away from the ceremony with an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
Us is Jordan Peele’s follow-up to Get Out, focusing on a family terrorized by mysterious, deadly doppelgangers. After opening Thursday night, Us raked in $70 million during its first weekend in U.S. theaters. The impressive opening gross puts Us in the third place for all-time horror box office openings, only behind Halloween‘s $76 million opening last year and IT‘s $123 million opening the year before.
After more than doubling Get Out‘s $33 million opening weekend, Us has earned the title of biggest opening weekend for an original horror film, given that Halloween is a sequel and IT is an adaptation of a Stephen King novel. Overseas, Jordan Peele’s latest horror film earned another $16.7 million, bringing its worldwide total to $86.95 million.
Jordan Peele’s Us became a huge critical hit when it premiered at SXSW in Austin, Texas earlier this month. During that same festival, the horror movies The Curse of La Llorona and Pet Semetary also garnered huge buzz after their premieres. The Curse of La Llorona heads to theaters on April 20th, with Pet Semetary arriving two weeks prior on April 5th.
It’s too early to tell whether or not those two films can match the success of Jordan Peele’s Us when they premiere. Given that The Curse of La Llorona is part of The Conjuring franchise and Pet Semetary is a Stephen King adaptation, it seems that the next few weeks could bring some massive success to the horror genre. Even fans of the X-Men franchise will be getting a taste of the horror genre when The New Mutants finally gets released.
We’ll be sure to keep you updated on all news regarding Jordan Peele’s Us as soon as more information becomes available. What did you think about Us?
