2015’s Fantastic Four reboot will forever live in comic book movie infamy. The film is infamous for it behind the scenes drama as well as an abysmal performance at the box office and a savage reception by fans and critics. At the center of the drama was, of course, director Josh Trank, though how much of this was his fault remains unclear.
Before Fantastic Four was even released, Josh Trank himself disowned the movie. Later on, it turned out that many of the film’s behind the scenes problems were due not only to the studio’s management but the director’s erratic behavior on set. After principal photography concluded Josh Trank’s involvement in the film was lessened to a great degree and the Fantastic Four director was not happy about it.
While speaking to Polygon, Josh Trank spoke about how he felt during the film’s reshoots, likening it to a castration:
“It was like being castrated… You’re standing there, and you’re basically watching producers blocking out scenes, five minutes ahead of when you get there, having [editors hired] by the studio deciding the sequence of shots that are going to construct whatever is going on, and what it is that they need. And then, because they know you’re being nice, they’ll sort of be nice to you by saying, ‘Well, does that sound good?’ You can say yes or no.”
What do you all make of Josh Trank’s words? Should Fox have allowed the director to make the Fantastic Four film he wanted? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
