Joss Whedon Gave James Gunn Advice For ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’

James Gunn has revealed that Joss Whedon gave him a bit of advice for his debut into the MCU, and it made Guardians of the Galaxy the franchise it is today.

James Gunn revealed that Joss Whedon gave him advice on Guardians of the Galaxy, and it seems as though said advice ultimately made the movie the surprise hit that it became.

In an essay written for Movie Maker, Gunn reflects on the various things he’s learned as a filmmaker. One of the first things he mentions is an idea that many of us heard on after-school specials: ‘be yourself’. The only difference is that this idea was applied to his writing – sound advice which came from Whedon, a fellow Marvel director.

“When Joss Whedon read the first draft that I had written of Guardians of the Galaxy, he thought it wasn’t ‘James Gunn’ enough. I had actually been holding back. I was afraid that to make a huge commercial movie, I had to make it like other movies. Joss said, ‘I like the parts that are James Gunn. Just make it more James Gunn.’ And that’s what I did. I was glad he gave me that vote of confidence.”

And the rest is history – the biggest superhero movie hit of 2014 that somehow managed to end its worldwide run at the box office ahead of much more popular properties like Spider-ManX-Men, and Captain America. Not bad, James Gunn, not bad at all.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 blasts off on May 5, 2017. The film stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, and Kurt Russell as Ego.
